The success of last year's Threadless Tee contest led me to create an all-new composition in the same spirit as the "Muppetational Mosaic." The "Celebrational Theatre" began as a partial nod to the classic Struzan movie posters of the 70's and 80's. My work is a very far cry from his brilliance yet the movie marquee concept evolved into this effort to mark a milestone in Muppet history.
I referenced many of the Muppet Theatre incarnations over the past 35 years, including comic book sketches, glimpses from television specials like The Muppets Go to the Movies, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and the redressed El Capitan Theater depicted in last year's The Muppets. The famed Henson Townhouse and Muppets Tonight's K-MUP building have also influenced the décor and the inclusion of an electronic spire.
Many puppets and classic graphics of the 70's were researched in order to achieve a vintage Muppet Show esthetic. Every character, ornamental curl and typographic logo was hand drawn on my Cintiq tablet and drafted into clean, 8-color vector shapes in Adobe Illustrator. This numbered and hand-signed print is the result of over 100 hours of work from a lifelong Muppet fan. I hope it honors the rich history of Jim Henson's Muppets that inspired me to become an artist.
